A Victory for Eco Hope: Minnesota Voters Renew Environmental Funding

In a monumental win for Minnesota’s environment, voters have overwhelmingly approved the renewal of dedicated lottery funding for the state’s Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF). This victory for eco-hope, achieved with an impressive 77% support, means that critical funding for conservation, clean water, wildlife, and public spaces is now secured through 2050.

Tonight, as we gather for Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Sustainability Works! gala, this news brings fresh energy to our celebration. The theme of “eco hope” resonates deeply with this achievement, showing that our shared commitment to the environment is alive and thriving across the state. This decision reflects Minnesotans’ collective determination to protect our lands and waters, ensuring that future generations will inherit a Minnesota rich in natural beauty and resources.

The ENRTF, which has provided over $1 billion for environmental projects since its inception in 1988, will continue to be a lifeline for initiatives that restore ecosystems, preserve wildlife habitats, enhance water quality, and build green infrastructure that connects us to nature. This year’s amendment also raises the annual draw from the fund to 7%, allowing for expanded projects and launching a new community grant program to support underserved communities—ensuring environmental stewardship benefits all.

At Sustainable Stillwater MN, we are inspired by the broad coalition of organizations, communities, and voters who made this success possible. “People can still agree on clean water and the environment, no matter what your politics are,” said Michelle Stockness, Executive Director of Freshwater. This overwhelming support proves that environmental protection remains a unifying priority for Minnesotans, regardless of background or political beliefs.

Tonight, as we gather to fundraise and look forward, we celebrate this shared commitment to sustainability. Together, we are building a future filled with eco-hope and resilience, where our natural world is valued and protected.

Thanks to this renewed funding, Minnesota’s dedication to a sustainable, thriving environment is stronger than ever—an inspiring reminder that by working together, we can create lasting, positive change.
