National Great Outdoors Month is a time to remember that some of life’s greatest treasures don’t come with a price tag — they come with fresh air, open skies, and time spent outside.

June kicks off with National Trails Day (the first Saturday of the month) and unfolds into National Camping Month, making it the perfect time to get outside, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the land.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mark Schwantes for his dedication and care in helping keep downtown Stillwater beautiful and litter-free. For years, Mark volunteered his time and energy to empty the cigarette butt containers and clean up litter around them—ensuring sidewalks, streets, and storm drains stayed clear of toxic debris that could otherwise end up in our beloved St. Croix River.

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, volunteers from across the Stillwater area gathered under cloudy skies—but thankfully dry weather!—to make a difference for our local ecosystem at the Green River Greening Lumberjack Landing restoration event. The event was a collaborative effort between Bird City Stillwater, the City of Stillwater, and Great River Greening.

Instead of abandoning the mower altogether in May and then compensating with a brutal cut, Slow Mow Summer promotes moderation and consistency. Think of it as the “meditation” of lawn care: slower, more intentional, and ultimately more beneficial to both people and pollinators.
