Rain Gardens in Action

Sometimes sustainability is happening right outside our door — and rain gardens are a great example.

During Valley Climate Action Week, Sustainable Stillwater MN hosted Explore a Local Rain Garden at Washington Square Park on September 15. The lunchtime gathering gave community members an opportunity to learn more about rain gardens, see sustainable stormwater management in action, and connect with one of SSMN’s key partners.

While attendance was small, the event provided a valuable opportunity for relationship building and learning. SSMN staff connected with Angie Hong of the Washington Conservation District and gained a deeper understanding of rain gardens and their role in managing stormwater.

Rain gardens can help capture and filter rainwater where it falls, while also creating habitat and adding beauty to the landscape. Seeing one in person can make the idea feel much more approachable — and hopefully inspire people to consider what sustainable stormwater solutions could look like in their own neighborhoods.

A small gathering can still be a meaningful step forward. We’re grateful to our partners for sharing their time and expertise and look forward to finding new ways to make rain gardens — and sustainable stormwater management — part of the conversation in Stillwater.
