Bird City Program

Protecting birds, habitat, and biodiversity

Program Leader:

About Progam:

The Bird City Program advances Stillwater’s commitment to protecting birds and the ecosystems they depend on through education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. Guided by best practices established by the Minnesota Audubon Society, the program focuses on engaging residents in bird conservation, restoring and enhancing habitat, and reducing human-caused threats to birds. These efforts reflect the understanding that healthy bird populations are a strong indicator of a healthy environment for people as well.

Sustainable Stillwater MN works closely with the City of Stillwater to implement Bird City (City Council Vote) requirements and integrate bird-friendly practices into broader community planning. Because Stillwater is also a Minnesota GreenStep City, many Bird City actions naturally align with GreenStep sustainability goals, strengthening climate resilience, biodiversity, and environmental quality at the same time. This coordinated approach helps ensure that conservation efforts are practical, measurable, and embedded in long-term systems change.

Designated a Minnesota Bird City in 2021, Stillwater’s Bird City program continues to build community awareness and stewardship through learning opportunities, partnerships, and shared action. Residents are encouraged to connect with one another, deepen their understanding of birds and habitat, and participate in protecting the natural systems that support life throughout the St. Croix Valley. Community members interested in birds and conservation are invited to join the Bird City Stillwater Facebook Group and to connect directly with Allison, the program lead, to get involved.
