Help Inspire the Next Generation on the St. Croix River

This May, Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Bird City program is teaming up with Wild Rivers Conservancy to bring local 4th graders out onto the St. Croix River for an unforgettable outdoor learning experience—and we’re looking for volunteers to help make it happen.

The Wild River Journey is a hands-on educational program that connects students to the natural beauty and ecology of the St. Croix Riverway. Taking place aboard a Stillwater river boat, students rotate through interactive sessions designed to spark curiosity, observation, and appreciation for the environment.

Volunteer Opportunity: Birds & Binocs

Volunteers will help lead a fun and engaging session called Birds & Binocs. In this role, you’ll:

  • Show students how to use binoculars

  • Introduce basic bird identification skills

  • Talk about birds that live along the riverway

  • Help students spot and observe birds in real time

Each volunteer shift runs from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and includes three 30-minute sessions with small groups of students.

📅 Dates: May 5–8, 2026

📍 Location: Stillwater River Boats (St. Croix River)

You can sign up for one day or multiple—whatever fits your schedule.

No Experience Needed

You don’t need to be an expert birder to participate. If you enjoy being outdoors, are comfortable engaging with kids, and have a curiosity about nature, you’ll be a great fit. Guidance and support will be provided so you feel confident leading your group.

Why Volunteer?

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Support environmental education for local youth

  • Connect with the St. Croix River in a meaningful way

  • Be part of a collaborative community effort

  • Enjoy a free boat ride while you volunteer

A Natural Fit for Our Mission

At Sustainable Stillwater MN, we believe that fostering a connection to nature is key to building a more sustainable future. Through our Bird City initiative, we promote awareness of local bird species, habitats, and biodiversity.

By volunteering with Wild River Journey, you’re helping students build that same connection—creating memorable experiences that can shape how they care for the environment for years to come.
