About the Event

Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Bird City program is partnering with Wild Rivers Conservancy for the Wild River Journey, an immersive outdoor learning experience for local 4th grade students.

Volunteers are needed May 5–8 from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM aboard a Stillwater river boat to help lead a session called Birds & Binocs. Volunteers will guide students in using binoculars, exploring bird identification, and observing wildlife along the St. Croix Riverway.

Each 2-hour session includes three rotating 30-minute groups of students. No birding experience is required—just a willingness to engage, encourage curiosity, and enjoy time on the river!

This is a fun and meaningful way to connect youth with nature—and yes, volunteers get a free boat ride.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Allison McGinnis at allison@sustainablestillwatermn.org.

This program supports Sustainable Stillwater MN’s mission to inspire environmental stewardship through community engagement and education. By helping students connect with the natural world—especially the unique ecosystem of the St. Croix Riverway—volunteers play a key role in fostering the next generation of environmental leaders.

Through the Bird City initiative, SSMN promotes bird conservation, habitat awareness, and biodiversity—making this experience a perfect blend of education, recreation, and sustainability in action.
