Exciting New Community/Citizen Science Project: Bird Listening Devices

We are thrilled to announce a new initiative approved by the Sustainable Stillwater MN Board of Directors at our July 17, 2024, meeting. This project aims to engage our community in environmental monitoring through the use of innovative bird listening devices known as Haikuboxes.

This initiative hinges on a generous $2,000 donation from John Wheatley, a retired 3M scientist with a passion for bird watching. The donation is crucial for purchasing and maintaining three Haikubox bird listening devices. This support is the key to getting this exciting project off the ground.

How the Project Works

The Community/Citizen Science Project will involve:

  • Site Selection (8-12 weeks): Choosing three suitable locations for the devices.

  • Installation: Setting up the devices with the help of tech-savvy student volunteers.

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collecting bird data and exploring customization options with the Haikubox team.

  • Student Engagement: Involving local school groups, such as the Synergy Club, in data collection and project development.

Promoting Sustainability Through Citizen Science

Understanding bird life is crucial for environmental sustainability. This project not only helps us monitor local bird populations but also fosters a deeper connection between our community and nature. By involving students and volunteers, we promote environmental awareness and citizen science.

This project relies heavily on the participation of school groups and student volunteers. A local leader will guide the student engagement efforts, and we will need tech-savvy students from area schools to assist with the setup and maintenance of the devices.

John's donation will cover the purchase of three Haikubox devices and a 5-year membership, with additional funding for a 4-year subscription extension. This funding ensures that the devices will be operational for nine years.
