Answering Nature’s Call — Celebrating the Great Outdoors

National Great Outdoors Month is a time to remember that some of life’s greatest treasures don’t come with a price tag — they come with fresh air, open skies, and time spent outside.

National Great Outdoors Month

Here in Stillwater, we are surrounded by natural beauty: winding rivers, shady trails, sunny parks, and starry skies. But how often do we take time to truly enjoy them? This month, let’s slow down, put down our screens, and reconnect with nature in meaningful ways.

Being outside isn’t just good for the soul — it's scientifically proven to boost mood, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep. And when we cultivate a deeper connection to the land around us, we naturally feel more compelled to protect it.

How to Celebrate:

  • Take a walk after dinner without your phone.

  • Pack a picnic and head to a local park or riverfront.

  • Try a new trail or nature reserve.

  • Invite a friend or family member for a bike ride or outdoor yoga session.

Most importantly, use this time to notice. The curve of a leaf. The buzz of a bee. The wind rustling tall grasses. This is the Earth talking to you — reminding us of our place in the great web of life.

Sustainability Connection:

Spending time in the outdoors fosters a culture of stewardship. When we feel part of nature, we are more likely to protect it — to vote for clean energy, to support land conservation, and to reduce our own impact. And by choosing outdoor activities over carbon-intensive entertainment, we also cut emissions and conserve resources.

Let’s make this June about gratitude, connection, and protection — for the Great Outdoors and for each other.
