Buckthorn Bust at Lily Lake Park

Dress warm, wear gloves, bring tools for digging and pulling out trees.

2 Volunteer Shifts

8:30 AM Setup: Photography, snacks, drinks, extra gloves/hats and tools at the picnic pavilion. Introductions.

9:00 AM Training:  Use of tools and where to put pulled plants.

9:15 – Noon: Dig/pull out buckthorn seedlings along the lake edge and up the hill to the dirt road and across the road toward the hill:

· Pull by hand or by “buckthorn pullers” provided. careful not to let any berries fall onto the ground—

· Ease out the roots carefully with a shovel if necessary careful not to leave the root in the ground.

· Toss the seedlings into the designated site for pick up later by the city.

Noon - 3:00 PM: The afternoon shift takes over with chain saws to cut down the trees. City staff poison the remaining stem surfaces.
