About the Event

Sustainable Stillwater MN is proud to promote this free educational opportunity that empowers residents with practical tools to reduce waste and care for our shared environment. Food waste is one of the largest contributors to landfill volume and a significant source of methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas. Programs that divert organic material from the trash play a critical role in building a more resilient and climate-friendly community.

Hosted by River Market Community Co-op and led by environmental specialists from Washington County, this online session introduces participants to the Food Scraps Pickup Program—a free curbside service that allows residents to compost a wide range of food scraps, including items that are not typically accepted in backyard compost systems. Attendees will learn how the program works, how to participate successfully, and how industrial composting transforms food scraps into nutrient-rich soil that benefits regional ecosystems.

The class also goes beyond composting logistics, offering practical strategies to prevent food waste at home through mindful purchasing, storage, and meal planning. By sharing this event, Sustainable Stillwater MN aims to connect our community with trusted local partners and accessible solutions that support sustainable living. Promoting events like this helps advance our mission of education, collaboration, and action—demonstrating how individual household choices contribute to a healthier Stillwater and a more sustainable future for all.
