SSMN VOLUNTEER OPTIONS

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER

BOD Member (oversees organization, working member)

Description: They are the highest leadership body of SSMN and are responsible for determining our goals and purpose, strategic and organizational planning, ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management, approving and monitoring SSMN’s initiatives, enhancing our public image, and assessing our own performance as the governing body. 


Duties: Attend monthly meetings plus any extra committee meetings. Submit/review and approve/reject new initiatives. Review meeting agenda and support materials prior to board and committee meetings. Review and suggest edits to previous meeting minutes. Develop and implement a strategic plan yearly with the other board members. Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments when needed. Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the board chair. Create and review outcomes and metrics created by SSMN for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics. Approve SSMN’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; be informed of, and meet all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities. Represent SSMN to stakeholders; act as an ambassador for the organization. Ensure SSMN’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities SSMN serves.

ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION WORKGROUP LEADER

Initiative Leader (leads volunteers to accomplish initiatives)

Description: Active transportation is the act of mobilizing people through non-motorized means and is based around human physical activity. This workgroup would focus on fighting for connective and safe streets for pedestrians and cyclists. Active transportation has almost-endless societal benefits; for instance improved physical and mental health, increased personal savings and economic development, reduced air pollution and carbon emissions, and a basic connection to community. 


Duties: Know SSMN’s vision and develop a workgroup charter as a guide to achieve goals. Create or support initiatives for the workgroup and submit them to the BOD for approval. Produce a yearly budget and fundraising goals to support initiatives. Report monthly to the BOD on the status of current initiatives. Submit upcoming events and open volunteer positions to the communication coordinator. Organize and lead meetings for the workgroup. Organize and track workgroup assistants and other volunteers. Attend outreach events to recruit volunteers and provide information about the workgroup. Represent SSMN to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.

COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR

Ambassador (represent SSMN in the community)

Description: Ambassadors are individuals who represent and promote Sustainable Stillwater MN in the community. Our ambassador volunteers come in many forms. They range from Bird City leaders to city officials to cigarette canister monitor volunteers. Ambassadors can even lead their own independent initiative with the backing of SSMN.

Duties: Promote SSMN in a positive light while attending community events. Share our initiatives, programs, and upcoming events with the public. If leading an independent initiative, report status monthly to a board member or workgroup leader. 

CLIMATE CHANGE WRITER

Independent Volunteer (works on their own)

Description: The communications committee is looking for an individual who would be willing to write short articles about climate change topics monthly. The articles would be reviewed by the committee's co-leaders and be published on the SSMN blog, newsletter, and social media. The articles are to provide education on how climate change is affecting Minnesota using reputable resources.

Duties: Write a 300-500 word article monthly about climate change. Send to Kelsey Depew, communication co-leader, by the 1st of the month to have published on the website.

All businesses (including home-based, sole proprietary, and others) must apply to be in the Directory by filling out an application that has strict criteria about their products and practices from GreenAmerica.org.

SSMN mission is to create and support local sustainability initiatives, and we want to here it from you on what we should be focusing on doing next.

ATTEND UPCOMING EVENTS

Throughout the year we host several events at various locations in Stillwater. These events range from utilizing muscles for cleanups and plantings to simply attending educational classes, fun shows, fairs, or festivals. We are always looking for willing volunteers to help with various initiatives, but we also host/support events that are educational.

BUY SSMN SWAG

Support SSMN by purchasing some swag. Our clothing is luxurious, strong, and soft, purchased from Econscious, an American company that specializes in sustainable apparel and accessories. Printing is done by Big Frog of Woodbury, which uses water-based (not oil-based) inks. All proceeds are distributed to fund various SSMN initiatives.

BEST HOME PRACTICES

This is one of the simplest ways to help out our cause. Support us by going out of your way to practice sustainability in your home and in your daily life. This can be done on a small scale like using reusable bags for groceries or on a large scale by supporting government candidates or programs that are focused on sustainability.
