Water Best Practices

Review the best practices below and ask yourself:

  • Are we already doing this?

  • Could this be a future improvement?

These examples show how businesses can save water and operate more sustainably:

  • Stormwater Management – Use rain gardens, bioswales, and eco-roofs to handle rainwater and reduce runoff. Clean storm drains yearly to prevent clogs and flooding.

  • Water Monitoring – Track your water use annually to find ways to save and run more efficiently.

  • Efficient Landscaping – Use native and drought-tolerant plants that need less water and support pollinators. These also help reduce runoff.

  • Leak Prevention – Check and repair leaks in faucets, toilets, and hoses to prevent waste.

  • Low-Flow Fixtures – Install fixtures that meet these efficiency standards:

  • Kitchen faucets: 1.5 gallons/minute or less

  • Restroom faucets: 1 gallon/minute or less

  • WaterSense toilets/urinals: 1.28 gallons/flush

  • Pollution Prevention – Keep pollutants out of storm drains by cleaning parking areas and marking drains with reminders.

  • Outdoor Waste Management – Use secure lids on outdoor bins and provide cigarette receptacles to prevent litter and contamination.

  • Tree Canopy & Vegetation – Plant and maintain trees, especially near pavement, to reduce runoff and absorb rainwater.

  • Skip Bottled Water – Offer tap water instead of bottled—it’s more sustainable and reduces waste.

Reflect on Your Water Use

What Are You Doing Now?

  • List current efforts to conserve water.

  • Are you using low-flow fixtures, maintaining stormwater systems, or encouraging water-saving habits?
