Below is an exclusive from Sofia Logan:
"My name is Sofia Logan and I, along with Maria Kalambokidis and Sam Schirvar, co-founded Sustainable Stillwater MN in 2013 as a high school student! I am a singer-songwriter and just released my first single, “Waiting for You, Waiting for Me,” which is about the current inaction by our political leaders in regard to climate change (the song title refers to this inaction).
“Waiting for You, Waiting for Me” was inspired by Chris Formby, a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency environmental scientist. The title came from his notes on a presentation at a leadership academy on global warming. I co-wrote the song with my dad (author Chuck Logan), Chris Formby, and music producer Andrew Turpening.
Activist Greta Thunberg and her team allowed me to use a quote from one of her U.N. addresses in “Waiting for You, Waiting for Me.” All proceeds from this song will be donated to organizations dedicated to preserving and improving our climate.
I remember Maria Kalambokidis and I first came up with the idea for Sustainable Stillwater MN (then Transition Stillwater) on the train ride back from a climate change rally in Washington D.C. in February 2013. Working with Sustainable Stillwater MN in high school influenced me to double major in Global Studies (with a thematic focus on environmental sustainability in Latin America) and History. During a semester abroad in Ecuador, I had an internship with Unión de Afectados por Texaco (Union of People Affected By Texaco), a law office representing indigenous peoples’ rights in the lawsuit against oil giant Chevron.
Thank you all so much for your support and for growing Sustainable Stillwater MN into such an effective organization and forward-thinking force in Stillwater and beyond."
