The Real Monsters Are in Your Shopping Cart

Forget ghosts, goblins, and things that go bump in the night. There are scarier things lurking around this October… like overflowing landfills, fast fashion hauls, and a planet that’s heating up.

The scariest part? We’re invited to bring these monsters home.

A monster made of shopping bags and junk, glowing eyes, moonlit bats, and text: The Real Monsters are in Your Shopping Cart

Every year, spooky season comes with a whole new wave of stuff we’re told we need: plastic decorations, disposable costumes, mountains of candy wrappers, and trendy treats that are fun for a moment but stick around in the environment long after the Halloween candy is gone.

And just as the cobwebs come down, we’re bombarded with new reasons to shop for Thanksgiving centerpieces, Christmas lights, festive décor, and holiday must-haves. The cycle of buying, decorating, and tossing never seems to end—and the planet pays the price.

Overconsumption is a monster that haunts us all year long. The constant pressure to buy more, upgrade more, and throw away more fuels waste, pollution, and climate change.

Yikes!

But don’t worry. You don’t need garlic, silver bullets, or a ghostbuster to fight back. Just a few simple habits can help keep these environmental horrors at bay:

🕸️ Shop your closet. Get creative with a costume using what you already own, or swap with a friend.

🎃 Decorate without the doom. Reuse decorations, get crafty with natural materials, or find secondhand treasures.

🍬 Treat waste like a trick. Choose less packaging when you can, and compost food scraps where accepted.

👻 Beware the impulse buy. Before buying something new, ask yourself: Do I really need it? Can I borrow it, repair it, or find it used?

The good news? We don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. Every purchase we skip, every item we reuse, and every bit of waste we prevent is a small way to break the cycle.

This October (and November and December), let’s make overconsumption the monster we’re all trying to escape this season.

Happy Halloween from Sustainable Stillwater MN! May your treats be sweet, your costumes be creative, and your footprint be a little less frightening. 🧡
