It may have felt more like mitten weather than biking weather on the morning of May 6, but that didn’t stop hundreds of Stillwater Area elementary students from showing up ready to ride.

For the second year in a row, all seven elementary schools in ISD834 participated in Bike & Roll to School Day, with an estimated 300+ students biking, scootering, and rolling their way to school. Despite the chilly temperatures, the event once again proved that our community is excited about active transportation and creating safer, healthier ways for kids to get to school.
Led nationally through the Safe Routes to School National Partnership movement, Bike & Roll to School Day is designed to do more than create one fun morning for students. The event helps build awareness around safe biking routes, school infrastructure, and the importance of making walking and biking realistic everyday options for families.
At Sustainable Stillwater MN, this work connects directly to our Transportation Program and our commitment to improving biking safety and accessibility throughout the community — starting with kids. From bike racks and helmet storage to safer crossings, sidewalks, and bike education, events like this help spark conversations and momentum around what students need to safely ride to school year-round.
A huge thank you goes out to the principals, school staff, volunteers, and families who helped organize and support the event across all participating schools. Seeing students bundled up, smiling, and arriving under their own power made the chilly morning well worth it.
Another successful Bike & Roll to School Day is in the books — and we’re already excited for next year.
