We are thrilled to welcome Brett Sitter as the newest member of the Board of Directors for Sustainable Stillwater MN!
A Minnesota native, Brett has called the St. Croix Valley home for the past five years. He and his extraordinary wife, their sassy 4½-year-old daughter, and a handful of beloved pets live in the beautiful community of Marine on St. Croix—a place that reflects the deep connection to nature that shapes both his personal and professional life.
Brett has spent many years working in the sustainability space, from large corporations to, most recently, an innovative startup. As Head of Product Development and Sustainability, he helps lead a company that captures landfill (or biodigester) gas and converts it into low-carbon hydrogen for clean energy and engineered carbon for stronger, more durable materials.
This work transforms a prolific greenhouse gas into high-value, climate-positive products—an approach that perfectly reflects Brett’s passion for practical, scalable sustainability solutions. His professional experience brings valuable insight to our board as we continue supporting initiatives that create measurable environmental impact right here in the Stillwater area.
Outside of work, Brett finds joy in hiking, gardening, photography, and simply sitting still long enough to observe the natural world. Over the past several years, he has taken on a major restoration project: transforming five acres of old monoculture pasture into thriving native prairie.
It has been, in his words, one of the most rewarding projects of his life:
“To see nature respond when we give it a little nudge in the right direction gives me so much hope! Every day I see more biodiversity, from insects to large mammals and everything in-between.”
His lived experience of ecological restoration embodies what sustainability looks like in action—patience, stewardship, and trust in nature’s resilience.
Sustainable Stillwater MN’s purpose is to create and support local initiatives that promote sustainability in the Stillwater area. Brett deeply believes in this mission:
“Local initiatives are a fundamental part of the change needed on the grand scale. By focusing locally it empowers residents and businesses the opportunity to instill a new culture and mindset. It enables a new mindset and thought process about how to live or run a business. These local results can create momentum that other cities can replicate which broadens the impact the change has. I wholeheartedly support local change because I know how it can be a driving force for large-scale impact. Culture change happens one person at a time.”
Brett’s perspective reminds us that meaningful change doesn’t begin in distant boardrooms—it begins in communities. It begins with neighbors. It begins with us.
We are honored to have Brett’s expertise, vision, and grounded optimism guiding Sustainable Stillwater MN as we continue building a more resilient, regenerative future—one local initiative at a time.
