Sometimes, it takes a village… and sometimes, it takes a flash mob!

On July 30th, a dedicated crew of six volunteers rallied together to rescue a stretch of rain gardens along Wilkins Street that had fallen on hard times.
Led by Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Rain Garden Maintenance Coordinator, Ruth Alliband, the “weed-busting” team spent 2.5 hours in the evening heat clearing out unwanted growth and giving these important gardens a fresh start.
A huge shout-out to Alexis Lappe, Peter Ownby, Elsie Rush, Kelly Stichter, and Jon Viegut, who rolled up their sleeves and made an incredible difference. Kelly even returned with Ruth later that week to tackle the last garden—true dedication! Thanks also to the volunteers who maintain these gardens year-round and the Washington Conservation District, who are partnering with the City to provide replacement plants for replanting soon.
Rain gardens aren’t just pretty—they filter stormwater, reduce runoff, and provide habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. When we care for them, we care for the health of our waterways and our entire community.
Want to help keep our rain gardens thriving? Volunteer opportunities pop up throughout the season, and every hand makes a difference. Stay tuned for more chances to get involved—or contact Ruth directly to be added to her volunteer list at ruthalliband@gmail.com.
✨ Together, we’re making Stillwater greener, one garden at a time.
