Extreme Heat: Stay Safe, Stay Cool, and Save Energy

Summer heat can be more than just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. During periods of extreme heat, it's important to take steps to protect yourself, your family, your pets, and your neighbors.

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Watch for:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Muscle cramps

  • Fatigue

  • Clammy skin

If symptoms occur:

  • Move to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned place.

  • Use cool cloths or take a cool bath or shower.

  • Fan wet skin to help cool the body.

  • Drink cool water or an electrolyte drink.

Call 911 if symptoms worsen, last more than an hour, or include chest pain or shortness of breath.

Remember Your Pets

Our pets and local wildlife need extra care during hot weather, too.

  • Always provide freshwater and shade.

  • Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening.

  • Avoid hot pavement—it can burn paws.

  • Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

  • Consider placing a shallow dish of fresh water outside for birds and other wildlife.

Stay Cool and Save Energy

Keeping your home cool doesn't have to mean higher energy bills. Xcel Energy recommends:

  • Use a programmable thermostat.

  • Run ceiling fans counterclockwise during the summer.

  • Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day.

  • Replace air conditioner filters regularly.

  • Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.

  • Switch to LED light bulbs.

  • Run dishwashers, laundry, and other heat-producing appliances during the evening or early morning.

  • Open interior doors to improve airflow.

A home energy assessment can also help identify ways to improve efficiency and lower cooling costs over the long term.

Look Out for One Another

Check in on older adults, neighbors, friends, and anyone without reliable air conditioning. A quick phone call or visit can make a big difference during periods of extreme heat.
