Join the Stop Food Waste Challenge This August: Save Money, Time, and the Planet

Food waste is a hidden problem in many American households. In fact, nearly 40% of food is wasted somewhere along the supply chain in the U.S.—with much of that waste happening right at home. To address this issue, the Stop Food Waste Challenge is returning this August, giving individuals and families a fun, interactive way to reduce waste, save money, and lessen their environmental impact.

Stop Food Waste Challenge 2025

The Stop Food Waste Challenge empowers participants to examine their food habits and make simple but meaningful changes. Whether it's through better meal planning, creative cooking, or simply paying closer attention to expiration dates, the goal is to reduce the amount of food that ends up in the trash. For the average family of four, wasted food costs over $2,500 a year. That’s money lost, time wasted, and resources squandered.

How It Works

The challenge runs August 1–31, and it’s free to join. After signing up, participants can either join an existing team or create their own. They’ll start by tracking their food waste for a week—an eye-opening experience that helps identify the biggest problem areas. Then, participants choose from a menu of actions tailored to their needs and strengths, such as shopping with a list, storing food properly, or using leftovers creatively.

Throughout the month, participants report their progress and see the real-time impact of their efforts. The platform offers helpful resources, tips, and virtual events to support participants on their journey. It’s a chance to connect with others, stay motivated, and build lasting habits.

Why Sustainable Stillwater MN Is Involved

Sustainable Stillwater MN is excited to promote the Stop Food Waste Challenge because it aligns with our mission of reducing our community’s carbon footprint and supporting sustainable living. Wasted food doesn’t just impact wallets—it also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. By cutting food waste, individuals can make one of the most effective climate actions right from their own kitchens.

Residents are encouraged to join Sustainable Stillwater MN’s team and take the challenge together as a community. Let’s support one another and make a measurable impact this August.
