Kelsey Depew’s Communications Journey with Sustainable Stillwater MN

By Andi Arnold, the Executive Director, Sustainable Stillwater MN

As the new Executive Director of Sustainable Stillwater MN, I’ve spent my first few months listening, learning, and discovering the people and stories that have shaped this organization into what it is today. Again and again, one name keeps surfacing—always with admiration and gratitude: Kelsey Depew.

Kelsey’s journey with Sustainable Stillwater MN began back in October 2018, long before I arrived. She came in expecting to join a small group of volunteers passionate about sustainability. The secretary position happened to be open—and because she had her laptop, she naturally began taking notes. She never really stopped.

What she did from there is nothing short of transformative.

At the time, the organization had a sparse website, scattered tools, and minimal public presence. Kelsey took it upon herself to build something stronger. She redesigned our logo, rebuilt our website, and laid the foundation of the digital systems we still use today. From Google Workspace and Canva to Givebutter for donations and memberships, she set up the infrastructure that helps us communicate and grow.

With a Master’s in Natural Resources and Environmental Education, Kelsey has always had a deep commitment to environmental storytelling. She brings that passion into every aspect of her work—writing, design, photography, video, and more—all with a clear, authentic voice that makes our mission accessible and real.

From 2018 through 2021, she balanced both secretary and communications roles—often behind the scenes, rarely looking for recognition. In 2022, her communications work became a paid staff role, and she shifted her focus fully to that area, continuing to guide our voice and strategy while still serving on the board.

One of her most impactful contributions has been co-creating the Greater Stillwater Area Green Business Directory in 2020, which she continues to manage with our Lead Outreach Ambassador Leslie Frick. It remains a valuable resource for those looking to support local, sustainable businesses—and a true reflection of her thoughtful, community-centered approach.

On May 31, 2025, Kelsey officially stepped down from her board role to focus entirely on her role as Communications Coordinator. As someone stepping into leadership during this time of transition, I can see the care, intention, and structure she’s helped build. I feel lucky to inherit that strong foundation.

Kelsey’s story also resonates on a personal level. She grew up on a small Iowa farm, deeply connected to the land. Today, she lives on Big Carnelian Lake with her husband and their cat, finding joy in quiet creativity—gardening, biking, video editing (check out her YouTube alias Sun Zuka), or simply reading on the deck.

To Kelsey: Thank you for being one of the steady hands and creative minds that have carried this organization forward. I’m grateful for everything you’ve built and all the ways you continue to shape our future. And I’m truly honored to now work alongside you.

Here’s to the next chapter—together.
