From Rick Heidick, Board Chair, Sustainable Stillwater MN
Dear Sustainable Stillwater MN Community,
In light of recent events, I want to take a moment to connect with you—our supporters, followers, and neighbors—about what lies ahead for Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) and the work we do together. The past weeks have sparked conversations and raised important questions about our path forward, and I want to share my reflections on where we stand and how we can continue to thrive as a community.
The aftermath of the 2024 presidential election has left some of us grappling with uncertainty. Regardless of our personal beliefs or political leanings, as a 501(c)(3) organization, we remain committed to nonpartisanship. Yet, we cannot ignore the critical human values—honesty, integrity, rule of law, and human rights—that intersect with our mission.
These values are the foundation of our work: preserving natural resources, reducing the drivers of climate change, and championing social and climate justice. They ground our efforts and inspire us to forge ahead, no matter the challenges we face.
Where Do We Go From Here?
It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by obstacles that seem beyond our control. Some leaders may downplay the urgency of climate action, while others champion policies that risk harming the environment. However, the words of Stephen Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People offer a helpful framework: focus on what lies within your sphere of influence.
At SSMN, we can’t control every policy decision or societal shift. But we can focus on the impactful work we do right here in Stillwater:
Encouraging sustainable energy solutions.
Promoting eco-friendly transportation.
Supporting green businesses.
Advocating for environmental stewardship.
By doubling down on these efforts, we strengthen our ability to create meaningful change where it matters most—locally.
Why Hope is Essential
The theme of our recent gala was “Eco-Hope.” This wasn’t just a buzzword; it was a call to action. Hope isn’t about wishful thinking or ignoring reality. It’s about recognizing the power of our collective commitment to a sustainable future.
The challenges we face today are significant, but so are our opportunities to make a difference. Every tree we plant, every mile we bike instead of drive, and every small business we empower builds toward a healthier, more resilient community.
Now, more than ever, SSMN needs the passion and dedication of people like you. Together, we can:
Take concrete actions that align with our mission.
Advocate for sustainability in the Stillwater area.
Lead by example and inspire others to join us.
Thank you for your continued support. Whether you’ve attended a workgroup meeting, participated in a tree planting, or simply shared our message, you are helping us build a better future.
Let’s hold onto that “Eco-Hope” and move forward together—with purpose, with resilience, and with unwavering commitment to sustainability.
With gratitude,
Rick HeidickBoard Chair,
Sustainable Stillwater MN
